Which is the Best PC for Engineers?

If you are an engineer or an executive for an engineering company, you may find this blog useful as we discuss below the best PCs and computer specs for engineers. If you’re planning to buy your own computer or if you’re looking for desktops that you can provide for the in-house engineers in your office, read on.

Specification : The Best PC's for Engineers

For computational tasks and imaging software that’s heavy on the graphics, you’ll need a computer with high RAM and hard drive memory with multitasking capabilities.

Even a few seconds delay is more than significant when you switch from your email, to Autodesk Product Design Suite, to Chrome, to your folders, to Excel, to your cloud storage service, to FingerCAD, and back. And while you can always use external hard drives or the cloud for extra storage, it’s always more convenient when you have the files you need on your computer.

With these in mind, these are the specs we recommend for engineering PCs:

  • Intel i5 CPU or better
  • At least 8GB of RAM
  • At least 1TB hard drive, preferably SSD instead of HDD
  • At least 1920 x 1080 pixels of screen resolution
  • A powerful, gaming-level graphics card
  • At least a dual-core processor

A few more things about these specifications for engineeers:

An Intel i5 has four cores and is powerful and fast enough to accommodate above-average computer usage. Intel i3 processors are mainly found in today’s budget PCs, and they may not be as fast or robust as you need your computer to be. An i7 or i9 is most ideal.

The screen resolution and dedicated graphics card are ideal because you may need crisp, high-definition 2D and 3D images of your designs. Gaming computers can be your standard for these features. As for built-in storage, SSD is always better because it can retrieve, store and copy files faster than HDD.

Finally, a big RAM is essential for multitasking because it stores the data currently executed by the computer. This is different from the cache, although you need to consider both side-by-side when choosing a PC. A big cache in itself (e.g., 4MB L3) doesn’t guarantee speed in multitasking because you also need enough RAM space for that.

This discussion about RAM vs. cache can get tricky because it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. Feel free to contact Inside Tech for advice. Even better, we can put together a bespoke PC just for you.
